J. Andrew Wilson
Andy has a B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He served as Chief of the
Smithsonian Institution's Fire Protection Division from its inception in 1979 until 1993, at which time his
responsibilities were expanded to include the occupational safety program. He is an active member of a number
of organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association, American Association of Museums,
International Council of Museums, and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He serves on several national
and international committees working to promote the protection of museums, libraries, historic buildings, and
other cultural institutions from fire. He also serves as a free consultant, speaker, or teacher for any cultural
institution requesting assistance.
Prior to coming to the Smithsonian, Andy worked for the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies in
San Francisco, CA; Los Alamos, NM; Oak Ridge, TN; and Washington, DC.
